The problem
Like all good solutions, it started with a pattern of problems.
Inspectors and auditors we knew - building inspectors, safety auditors, site supervisors - were all running the same broken workflow.
A full day walking a site with a phone camera and a notebook. Then a full evening at a desk, doing the work a second time.
Pulling photos off the camera roll. Trying to remember which hallway that crack was in. Retyping handwritten notes, then fighting a Word template into something a client could be sent.
The reporting took as long as the inspection. Sometimes longer.
And every handover between site and desk was a chance for detail to fall through the cracks - an unlabelled photo, a note that made sense at 2pm but not at 9pm.
The fix
We built AuditBase to collapse that entire workflow into the device already in the inspector's hand.
Two decisions shaped everything else.
First, it had to work fully offline.
Second, compliance couldn't be an afterthought. Digital signatures are built in, giving every inspection a verifiable trail from capture to sign off.
On site, you capture each issue as you find it - a photo, the details, and the context, recorded together.

When the walk through ends, the report is essentially done. AuditBase builds a branded, professional PDF straight from the phone.
Pick from seven report themes so the finished document looks like your business, not ours.

At a glance:
- Capture issues on site - photo, location, and notes in one place
- Seven professional PDF report themes
- Branded reports generated straight from the phone
- Works fully offline, wherever the job is
- Digital signatures built in for a verifiable audit trail
The result
The evening report writing session is gone. What used to be a two part job - inspect, then document - is now one continuous motion. Walk the site, capture as you go, send the report before you've left the car park.
Where it landed
We wrote the piece above the week AuditBase went live. Since then it's been picked up by the people it was built for, and it climbed further than we expected for a first release.
- #4 in Productivity on the New Zealand App Store
- #36 overall on the New Zealand App Store top charts, across every category
- 5 stars from its App Store reviews
For context on that second number: the all-apps chart is the one where a niche field tool sits alongside the banks, the social apps, and the streaming services. A tool for building inspectors has no business being on it. That it got there says something about how badly the evening report writing session needed to die.

Build the boring thing that removes someone's worst three hours of the week, and you don't need much else.
That's the story of AuditBase.
