What is BEEP?

BEEP runs the standard 20 metre multi-stage fitness test from your phone. It plays the beeps and calls out every level and shuttle. Audio keeps going with the screen locked, so you can set the phone down and run.

BEEP runs 21 levels, from 8.0 km/h at level 1 up to 18.5 km/h at level 21. From level 2 on, the speeds match Léger's 1988 protocol. The test itself is free. Pro logs each result and estimates VO2 max with the Léger formula, adjusted for age.

Pro also lets one phone test a whole team or class at once, with a result saved for each athlete. Everything stays on your device. There's no account to create, and nothing is sent to our servers.

Who it's for

Athletes and runners

Footballers, rugby players and runners use it to check aerobic fitness through a season and watch their best score move.

Police, military and fire applicants

If your recruitment fitness assessment includes a 20m shuttle run, practise against the standard audio and know your level before test day.

PE teachers

Run a full class on one phone. Log each student as they drop out and export the results when the lesson ends.

Coaches and sports scientists

Test a squad together, compare athletes and pull the data into your own analysis as a CSV.

Questions about BEEP

Is BEEP the same as the bleep test or PACER test?

Yes. The beep test, bleep test, PACER test, 20m shuttle run and multi-stage fitness test are all versions of the same 20 metre shuttle run, with beeps that get faster each level. BEEP runs 21 levels from 8.0 km/h up to 18.5 km/h, and from level 2 the speeds match Léger's 1988 protocol.

Does BEEP work offline or with the screen locked?

Yes to both. The test needs no internet connection, and the audio keeps playing with the screen locked. While a test is running BEEP also keeps the screen awake, so you can follow the level on screen if you prefer.

How does BEEP calculate VO2 max?

VO2 max estimates are part of Pro. With an age entered, BEEP uses the Léger et al. (1988) equation, which works from the running speed of the last level reached and holds adult ages at 18 as Léger recommends. Without an age it falls back to a simpler estimate from your level and shuttle. Either way it's an estimate, so use it to track change over time rather than as a lab result.

Can I test a whole team or class at once?

Yes, with Pro. Add everyone to a group session, run the audio once, and tap each person out as they drop. BEEP saves each athlete's score and VO2 max estimate in one session, and you can export it all to CSV.

Is there a subscription?

No. Running the test is free. Pro is a single one-time purchase that unlocks group testing, history, VO2 max trends and export for good.

Does BEEP collect my data?

No. Results and athlete details are stored only on your device. BEEP doesn't use analytics or advertising SDKs, and Studio Phoenix can't see your data. The App Store privacy label reads "Data Not Collected".
