Getting Started
Welcome to Beep on iOS. Beep is a complete multi-stage (20-metre) fitness test tool - audio-guided level and shuttle progression, real-time VO2 max estimation, normative fitness ratings, performance logging for individuals and groups, and CSV export. This support guide will help you get the most out of the app on your iPhone or iPad.
App Permissions
Beep may request the following permissions to function as intended. You can manage them under Settings > Beep on your device.
- Microphone & Speech Recognition: Optional - used for hands-free voice input (for example, calling out participant scores during a group test). Audio is processed by your device's on-device or operating-system speech services and is not transmitted to Studio Phoenix.
- Photo Library: Optional - used only when you choose to add a profile picture or attach session photos. Selected images are stored locally on your device and never uploaded.
- Notifications: Optional - used solely to deliver a local "test still running" reminder when the app is backgrounded during an active beep test. No marketing or scheduled reminder notifications are sent.
- Background Audio: Used to keep the beep audio, level announcements, and shuttle countdown playing continuously while the screen is locked or another app is in the foreground during a test.
These permissions are optional. The app is fully functional without them, though certain features (voice input, profile photos, background test reminders) may be limited.
Core Features
Beep includes the following features:
- Audio-Guided Beep Test: Run the official 21-level multi-stage fitness test protocol with spoken level and shuttle announcements - hands-free, no second person required to manage audio.
- Real-Time VO2 Max: Estimated using the Léger formula, age-adjusted when a participant's age is recorded.
- Normative Fitness Ratings: Each result is mapped to an age- and gender-adjusted rating against published normative data.
- Individual & Group Testing: Log a single participant or capture results for an entire team in a single session, with automatic name recall for repeat testing.
- Performance History: Browse past sessions, sort and filter, view personal bests, deltas vs previous tests, and 30-day trends.
- Training Goals: Set a target score over a chosen period and track consistency, distance covered, and active time.
- CSV Export: Share session results as CSV via the iOS share sheet, the Files app, AirDrop, email, or any installed sharing destination.
- Themes: Light and dark themes, with automatic switching based on your system appearance.
Pro Upgrade
Beep is free to download and use, with core test, logging, and export features available at no cost. An optional in-app purchase unlocks Pro features. Key details:
- All purchases are processed through the Apple App Store.
- To restore a previous purchase on a new device or after reinstalling, use the "Restore Purchases" option on the upgrade screen within the app.
- Refunds are handled in accordance with Apple's App Store refund policy.
Saving and Backing Up Your Data
All session, participant, goal, and preference data is saved locally on your device. Beep does not use cloud storage or external servers. To protect your data:
- Your data is included in iCloud backups if iCloud Backup is enabled on your device (Settings > [Your Name] > iCloud > iCloud Backup).
- Use the built-in CSV export feature regularly to keep a copy of your session history.
- Save exported files to the Files app, iCloud Drive, or another secure storage service.
Important: Uninstalling the app will permanently delete all locally stored data. Studio Phoenix cannot recover data after deletion.
Running a Test Safely
The beep test is a maximal aerobic exercise test that places real physical demands on the body. Before running a test:
- Ensure the testing space is at least 20 metres of level, non-slip ground, clear of obstacles, with appropriate footwear.
- Warm up properly. Stop immediately if you experience chest pain, dizziness, severe shortness of breath, or any other symptom of distress.
- Consult a qualified healthcare provider before testing if you have any medical condition or injury that may be affected by intense exercise.
- When testing other people (e.g. students or club members), obtain any required consent under applicable law before entering their name, age, or gender.
VO2 max estimates and fitness ratings produced by the app are derived from published formulas and normative data and are estimates only - they are not a substitute for laboratory testing or professional assessment.
Troubleshooting
- Audio stops when the screen locks: Ensure background app refresh is enabled in Settings > General > Background App Refresh and that Beep is not restricted. The app requires the background audio entitlement to keep the beep audio playing while the screen is locked.
- Voice input not working: Ensure you have granted Microphone and Speech Recognition permissions in Settings > Beep. If a permission was previously denied, you may need to enable it manually in your device settings.
- Profile photo won't attach: Check that Beep has Photo Library access in Settings > Beep > Photos.
- "Test still running" alert not appearing: Ensure Notifications permission is granted in Settings > Beep > Notifications and that Focus or Do Not Disturb modes are not blocking notifications.
- CSV export not working: Ensure your chosen sharing destination (Files, iCloud Drive, Mail, etc.) is configured and signed in on the device.
- Pro upgrade not showing: Ensure you are connected to the internet and signed into your Apple ID. Try restoring your purchase from the upgrade screen within the app.
- App crashes: Make sure your iOS is up to date and restart your device. If the problem continues, try uninstalling and reinstalling (note: this will delete local data).
